What has killed more? Secular or religious ideology?

Religion has often been blamed for the most horrific massacres in human history. Those of religious devotion have had their religion attacked because of what their spiritual predecessors did hundreds, if not thousands of years ago. But what's often missed by secularists is how many people died as a result of secularism. Events such as the genocide of Native Americans, Africans, Australians and eventually Jews were done because of a belief in higher race, lower races and social Darwinism. Social Darwinism has lead to death of millions of people, but it's no religious ideology--it's a secular one.

According to the secular belief at the time of slavery and afterwards men evolved from apes and some evolved more quickly than others. People, hoping to better themselves exterminated whole populations and when a natural disaster killed people from the "lesser races" this was seen as nature's way of getting rid of the less-evolved. There was no enact value in man; he was simply one of millions of creatures that evolved through the process of natural selection. While mostly Evangelical Christians railed against slavery, most secularists supported it; holding Darwin's ideas close to their hearts.

Both secular ideology and religious have lead to the deaths of millions of people through our history, but which has done more damage? Let's start with religious ideologies over the last 2000 years:

Event Guiding religion Estimated number slaughtered
The Crusades Catholicism 3,000,000
Arab Conquests and Islamic Terrorism Islam

290 million

Human sacrifices of pagans Paganism; mostly south American
24,000000
Cult suicide
Modern religion, Hinduism and paganism
20,00000
Witch killings Protestant and Catholic 40,000
European wars and terrorism Religious conflict between Protestant and Catholics 120,000
Arab inner-conflict Religious conflict between Sunni and Shi'te
150,00000
Asian murders based on religion Various religious devotees 150,000
The Inquisition  Catholicism
12500

So, over the last 2000 years about 334 million people have died as a result of religious belief. It's a terrible number but what about those who were compelled not by ideologies involving GOD, Allah, gods or goddesses but ideologies that were by their very nature secular, said to be rational and scientific.

Let's take a look:

Guiding ideology Estimated number killed
Tasmanian genocide
Social Darwinism
6,000
African slave trade and later genocides Social Darwinism 80 million
The holocaust Social Darwinism 11 million
The Secular “Revolution” in China Idealism of a secular state

45 million

The French Revolution Secular state ideology
731,740
The Soviet Union under Stalin Secular State ideology 50 million

Secular ideology has lead to the death of about 186 million people; either because they were deemed to be of a lessor race, a slower of evolution or in the way of forming a secular-based state.

It seems clear that although both numbers are disturbingly high, it is the religious ideologies that has lead to the deaths of more fellow human beings. However, consider this:

In 2000 years approximately 334 million people died due to religious ideologies, that's an average of almost 6 million people every year.

While in just the last 500 years 186 million people lost their lives due to secular ideologies, that's an average of about 2.6 million people every year.

If secularism existed to the extent it came to in the modern times it would have lead to the death of roughly 744 million people: much more than religious thinking has over the last 2000 years.

As Western civilization continues it's trend towards secularization the question now is will the genocides continue? Will a new people group be deemed "less-evolved" and fit for termination. Or will the secular state embrace the Christian idea of the value of life regardless of ethnicity and intellect? We shall see.
